Spousal sponsorship allows a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their legally married spouse, regardless of where the marriage took place, provided the marriage is recognized as valid in both jurisdictions.
Applications can be submitted as an inland application (when the spouse is already in Canada) or an overseas application. Inland applicants may also apply for an open work permit while the application is in process.
